Location: St. Mary’s Church Wedding Date: August 3 & 4, 2013 Venue: Seattle Police Athletic Association in Tukwila Number of Guests: 800+ Culture Represented: Eritrean

Description or Theme of wedding: I did not have a wedding theme but color coordination was very important to me.

The most memorable part of your wedding: Honestly, the whole experience was memorable but if I had to pick one, it would be the church ceremony. We had rehearsal the night before the wedding which was a total waste of time. On the day of the wedding, we had about 15 wedding coordinators that volunteered and took it upon themselves to change everything. We just went along with everything like we were part of the planning and it turned out well.

What makes your wedding unique: My wedding was unique in an essence that it merged two cultures together. I always loved Habesha weddings because they’re so different than your usual “American” wedding so I was never opposed to having a two day cultural wedding. It was very nice and unique to see our culture come alive when we’ve been in America for the majority of our lives and our parents are here to experience their culture in a different country. It was a very special time for them.

What was the most difficult part about planning your wedding: The most difficult part of planning my wedding had to be the traditional Habesha dresses for Sunday. I had a hard time finding a reliable vendor and once I thought I found one it turned out not to be the case. The dresses for Sunday were not what I ordered nor expected.

What was the easiest part about planning your wedding: The easiest part was the food of course. I was not involved with anything since the entire community in Seattle handles that part. Also, the décor was easy. Décor N’ Design was my vendor and they did an amazing job with the venue!

What advice would you give to the couple who is planning their wedding: I would say Start planning early, Make an itinerary/to do list of everything that needs to be done, Don’t rush to purchase your dress or the Bridesmaids dresses, Choose your Bridesmaids wisely- you want people who will make the process easy and stress free and most importantly, On the day of your wedding make sure to let go and enjoy your day! There is nothing you can change at that point so go with the flow and have fun! Marriage is a lifetime commitment, treat it like your job where you strive for promotion! Happy planning!

Where did you purchase or order your traditional clothes: I went through a lady that lives up North in Mountlake Terrace. I placed an order with her and she ordered the dresses from her contact in Ethiopia. (I don’t recommend this for any future brides since the dresses didn’t exactly come out the way I wanted them to.)
